Through-Hole Inductor to SMD GCD54 Replacement & Cost-Optimization
Aug 26, 2026Intelligent Browse: 1

Project Background

The customer’s existing design adopted a 33uH through-hole inductor. They intended to migrate to SMD GCD54 package for PCB surface-mount production, eliminating manual through-hole soldering processes while keeping component costs under control.

The original through-hole inductor was rated for 1.5A operating current. However, the real-world load current of the end equipment was only 200-300mA. The 1.5A high-current specification was over-specified, leaving room for cost reduction.

Collaboration Process

1. Gujing sales team initially proposed the 33uH SMD inductor in GCD54 package, which matched the 1.5A current performance of the original through-hole part. Corresponding tax-inclusive quotation and datasheet were provided for evaluation.

2. The customer verified the saturation current parameter and pointed out that 1A saturation current was sufficient for their 200-300mA actual load, and the 1.5A rating was unnecessary.

3. Based on the customer’s real working conditions, Gujing engineering team adjusted the magnetic core material. The footprint size of GCD54 package and 33uH inductance value remained unchanged, while saturation current was tuned down to 1A to fit the practical application. As an IATF 16949 certified manufacturer, Gujing strictly controls material switching and performance validation to guarantee consistent mass-production quality.

4. With identical package and inductance, and full compliance with end-device performance requirements, the revised version achieved a lower unit price for cost savings.

Key Benefits

· Package Conversion: Direct migration from through-hole to SMD GCD54 with the same inductance value. Supports SMT auto-mounting and removes manual soldering work to boost manufacturing efficiency.

· Application-oriented Material Selection: Avoid over-specification of high-current components. 1A saturation current variant is selected targeting the actual 200-300mA load of the customer’s equipment.

· Cost & Efficiency Optimization: Magnetic core formula adjustment cuts component procurement cost, without modifying package dimension or compromising electrical performance.

· Reliable Customization Supported by Certification: Holding IATF 16949 certification, Gujing ensures reliable quality during material and performance tuning. Backed by Gujing’s library of over 20,000 magnetic powder formulas. Multiple current-rating options are available within one single package to deliver diversified cost-performance solutions.
